William Smith Director of Galvanizers Association

Meet the expert: William Smith, Director

William Smith is Director of Galvanizers Association. He leads the organisation that provides independent technical and marketing services for the hot dip galvanizing industry in the UK and Ireland. With 35 years at GA and 40 years in the metals industries, he brings depth of knowledge to the advice GA gives.

Leading Galvanizers Association

William has been Director of GA for the last 10 years. He heads a team of technical and marketing specialists and works closely with the GA Board, its committees and the wider membership to set the Association’s direction. He describes the team as:
“An incredibly capable, driven and close-knit group, and it is my privilege to head up the team.”
Under his leadership, GA continues to provide authoritative, free guidance to specifiers, engineers and architects. This includes technical advice, standards development, sustainability data and CPD training.

Shaping the standards

For much of his career, William has chaired national, European and international standards development committees on behalf of the UK and Ireland. He has been at the centre of developing the standards that specifiers use for hot dip galvanizing, so GA’s guidance draws on deep knowledge of what those standards require and why.

International Investigative Expertise

William has carried out in-depth investigations into galvanized steel on projects in the UK, the Middle  East and North Africa. That experience across very different climates and service conditions gives him a thorough understanding of how galvanized coatings perform in the real world.

A Career Built on Metallurgy

William is a chartered engineer, metallurgist and materials scientist. Before joining GA, he worked in steel heat treatment and titanium alloy manufacturing. He joined GA as Technical Manager and then became General Manager before taking on the role of Director. He is a Member of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3) and the Institute of Corrosion (ICorr).

When you rely on GA guidance, you are drawing on expertise led by someone who has spent four decades in metallurgy and galvanizing and has helped write the standards. William and his team make sure the advice you receive is independent, technically rigorous and grounded in real-world experience.
